Hajime Sorayama’s art offers a chrome-plated, retro-futuristic glimpse ahead. Since the 1970s, his iconic drawings, paintings and sculptures have proposed a future of robots and cyborgs, most often female humanoids, gleaming with lustrous sensuality. Over the years, he has collaborated with a number of partners including Medicom, Sony, The Weeknd, XLarge, and Puma. In 2019, he was commissioned by legendary designer Kim Jones, to create a high profile (literally and figuratively) 39 ft. tall robot sculpture, erected as the centerpiece of the Dior Homme Pre-Fall runway show. First introduced in the early 1980s, Sorayama’s “Aquatic” series presented hyperreal airbrush illustrations of mechanical trouts, tuna, dolphins and most famously the “Sorayama Shark.” Decades after the original release, Sorayama reimagined the shark in a sculptural form, giving eternal life to this apex predator. This special edition sculpture measures in at 85 cm in length, and is forged from alloy with gold plating. It is hand signed by the artist making it a must-have collectible for any Sorayama enthusiast.
