NOTES:
Born in Concord, New Hampshire in 1957, George Condo has spent decades reshaping the language of contemporary portraiture through a practice he calls Artificial Realism. Now based in New York City, Condo’s work blends references to classical painting with a radical, fragmented approach to figuration, creating deeply psychological portraits that reveal the fractured nature of human identity. His pioneering concept of Psychological Cubism captures multiple emotional states within a single figure, fusing art history with a raw, often chaotic exploration of the subconscious. Today, Condo’s influence is widely recognized, with his work held in major international museum collections including Centre Georges Pompidou, Tate Modern, and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
In Untitled, Condo’s distinct visual language is on full display: a network of interwoven faces, hands, and abstract forms dissolve traditional notions of composition and character. Executed with an elegant economy of line, the drawing conjures a sense of both coherence and dislocation, echoing the layered complexities of human thought and feeling. The figures appear at once serene and manic, their emotions flickering across a single shared surface, underscoring Condo’s interest in the instability of identity. Channeling the spirit of Cubism and Surrealism through a distinctly contemporary lens, Untitled offers a vivid glimpse into the psychological theater that lies at the heart of Condo’s groundbreaking practice.
Condo’s work can be found in renowned public collections internationally, including: Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Dakis Joannou Collection Foundation, Athens; Museu d’Art Contemporani, Barcelona; Staedel Museum, Frankfurt; Tate Modern, London; The Broad Collection, Los Angeles; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
