Born in Oldenburg, Germany in 1954, Thomas Schütte is a prominent contemporary artist renowned for his diverse practice encompassing sculpture, architecture, drawing and printmaking. Educated at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under influential figures like Gerhard Richter, Schütte’s work critically engages with themes of cultural memory, the human condition and the role of art in society. His 2018 print series, Blues Women, pays homage to legendary blues singers Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, and Mamie Smith through a suite of four color etchings, each capturing the emotive power and enduring legacy of these iconic women.
