NOTES:

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio Tom Wesselman (1931-2004) was a leading figure in the Pop Art movement. He is renowned for his bold, stylized depictions of the female nude, often using industrial materials and techniques to elevate everyday imagery into fine art. His work frequently explores themes of sexuality, consumerism and the commodification of the human form, challenging traditional notions of beauty and representation.

In his Monica series, Wesselmann portrays his muse, Monica, in various intimate settings, capturing her in moments of repose and reflection. These works continue to combine elements of portraiture and still life, often featuring vibrant colors and simplified forms to emphasize the sensuality and presence of the subject. Through his series, Wesselman delves into the complexities of identity and the gaze, offering a contemporary take on the classical reclining nude.
