Created by Nigo for his pioneering Japanese streetwear label A Bathing Ape (BAPE), the BAPE STA emerged in 2002 as one of the most influential sneakers of its era. Inspired by the Nike Air Force 1, the design reinterprets the classic silhouette with bold color blocking and the brand’s signature shooting star logo.

This pair features faux ostrich leather uppers in brown with matching brown star logos—an unmistakable combination that embodies early-2000s street luxury. The materials and playful palette highlight Nigo’s innovative approach to blending pop culture, music, and fashion.

Founded by NIGO in 1993, BAPE became a global phenomenon in large part due to Pharrell Williams, who helped introduce the brand to Western audiences. In the early 2000s, Pharrell’s frequent appearances in BAPE solidified its status as a symbol of creative individuality and cultural prestige. Speaking about BAPE STAs during his appearance on Complex’s Sneaker Shopping, Pharrell reflected:

“This is not a Nike. This is something else. Taking inspiration from the Air Force 1 and just blew it out to another place... all the little fine small details, my mind knew that something was very, very different but like slight sophisticated levels up... I just wanted one pair.”

(Watch Pharrell discuss Bapestas from 2:45–5:24 on Complex Sneaker Shopping)

This pair was owned and worn by Pharrell Williams. A remarkable opportunity to own one of Pharrell’s own Bapestas—an icon of early-2000s streetwear and global design culture.

This lot is accompanied by a Certificate of Ownership verifying that the shoes are from Pharrell Williams’ private collection.
