Handwritten UNC Letter

This three-page handwritten letter from Michael Jordan was written during his time at the University of North Carolina. The letter is written on official university letterhead, featuring a basketball motif at the top and an image of the “Old Well”—a well-known campus landmark—at the bottom. The document was folded in half, consistent with its original mailing and storage.

Jordan enrolled at the University of North Carolina in 1981, drawn by its close-knit, family-oriented environment, the guidance of legendary head coach Dean Smith, and the opportunity to remain close to home. As a freshman, he delivered one of the most memorable moments in college basketball history, sinking the game-winning jump shot in the 1982 NCAA Championship game with approximately 15 seconds remaining. At just 19 years old, the shot marked the beginning of his rise to national prominence.

The letter is addressed to Jordan’s girlfriend at the time and offers a rare and intimate glimpse into his personal life during this formative period. In it, Jordan reflects on their relationship, expresses his desire to become engaged, and notes the need to save money for an engagement ring—revealing a thoughtful and grounded side of the future superstar.

Of particular significance, Jordan signed the letter three times: he includes his name and address at the top, signs his name at the conclusion, and adds a handwritten postscript featuring his personal motto. He closes the letter with the phrase “GOD LOVES YOU AND ME” written in all capital letters. It is exceedingly uncommon for Jordan to reference faith or religion so directly in handwritten correspondence, adding a distinctive and deeply personal dimension to the piece.

My Dearest Laquette,

How has life been treating you. Fine I hope. I miss you so much. I wish I could be with you forever but life has its disappointments. When I visit your campus this past Wednesday, I didn’t like him. I felt really sorry for you because you had to stay in that place.

It was really when you sat so close to Buzz but I guess you know that. I felt so embarrassed. Here I come to see you and sit closer to Buzz than me. I was very angry. I felt like calling it quits. But something told me not to. I guess it was because I love you so much. The bond that has build between us will be unbeatable soon. I know you await that moment, as well as I, but I do want to think about it.

I feel that my life is just beginning, I want to live it up, not saying that I don’t want to live it up with you, I do but as two people engaged. That time is nearing alas. I hope I can get a job and get the ring you want but if I don’t get the job I get ring Christmas. Well I must go but not without saying I Love You.
