NOTES:
Born in Baltimore in 1970, Derrick Adams is a multidisciplinary artist based in New York City whose practice spans painting, collage, sculpture, performance, and sound. His work explores how identity is shaped by cultural narratives, consumer objects, visual codes, and ideologies. Drawing from mass media, art history and popular culture, Adams examines the construction of the contemporary Black experience while celebrating moments of everyday normalcy and joy. This tattoo arises from his Floater series which portrays Black individuals at leisure in swimming pools and reclaims space and ease as an act of empowerment. Adams is also the founder of the Last Resort Artist Retreat, an artist residency program in Baltimore for creatives in the visual, sound-based, movement-based, culinary and literary arts.
