The No. 7.5 by Ōtsuka Lōtec is the brainchild of independent Japanese watchmaker Jiro Katayama, who has cultivated a loyal cult following among connoisseurs of experimental design. While the brand is distributed solely in Japan — purchased via lottery and limited to domestic buyers — it has quietly gained international acclaim for its distinct steampunk aesthetic, novel mechanics, and avant-garde approach to design. Working with a small team, Ōtsuka Lōtec produces fewer than 200 watches per year.

The No. 7.5 best exemplifies Katayama's background as an automotive and product designer, translating industrial design principles into an unconventional mechanical wristwatch. First introduced in 2021 and substantially refined in 2023, it abandons traditional hands entirely in favor of a jumping-hour display inspired by the three-lens turret cameras used for 8mm film during the 1930s. The asymmetrical dial carries this concept throughout: a custom sapphire fisheye lens magnifies the jumping-hour aperture on the left, while the largest window to the right displays the minutes on a rotating disc, complemented by a running seconds display. Measuring 40mm in diameter and 14.8mm thick — including its raised, lens-like display windows — the stainless steel case has a distinctive presence on the wrist. Contrasting straight-brushed and sandblasted finishes reinforce its purposeful, industrial character, while the sapphire caseback reveals the modified Miyota 82S5 automatic movement fitted with an in-house developed jumping-hour module.

The 2023 revision introduced a series of thoughtful technical and aesthetic enhancements. The case was upgraded from SUS303 to more durable SUS316L stainless steel, while sapphire crystals replaced mineral glass over the display apertures for improved clarity and scratch resistance. A newly engraved pin buckle and redesigned leather strap complete the watch, further elevating its fit and finish. Produced in exceptionally small numbers from Katayama's independent workshop, the No. 7.5 remains one of contemporary independent watchmaking's most distinctive and sought-after creations.
