Unveiled at SIHH in 2013, it marked the maison's first in-house minute repeater and simultaneously set two world records: the world's thinnest automatic minute-repeater movement, the Caliber 1290P measuring just 4.8mm, and the world's thinnest automatic minute-repeater case, measuring just 9.4mm thick. The minute repeater — a mechanism that chimes the time on demand — is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the classical complications, demanding that a watchmaker reconcile mechanical precision with genuine musical beauty.

Piaget achieved these record-setting dimensions in a self-winding movement by employing a platinum micro-rotor to maximize winding efficiency while minimizing height. Such slender proportions are not merely an aesthetic achievement but an acoustic challenge, as thinner cases provide less mass for resonance. Piaget overcame this through innovative case construction, suspending the movement on four braces within the case to optimize sound transmission and produce a chime capable of carrying over ordinary conversation.

The Emperador Coussin XL stands as a defining statement of Piaget's ambitions as a true manufacture of haute horlogerie. As the fourth grand complication developed entirely in-house at the La Côte-aux-Fées workshop and a record-holder that continues to command respect more than a decade later, it captures the maison at the height of its technical achievement. Numbered 5 of just 18 examples produced, it remains one of the rarest and most significant modern expressions of Piaget's horological expertise.
