Alan Vega's own Champion-branded fingerless leather gloves — worn extensively in concert and in press photographs throughout the Suicide tours of the 1980s and beyond, and right through to his final performances in 2015. The gloves are visible in concert footage from at least 1988, including a French festival performance in Rennes.
Vega cultivated a visual language as influential as his music: black leather, fingerless gloves, chains, biker jackets, and militaristic silhouettes combined with an intense physical stage presence to establish a template for punk and post-punk style that reverberated far beyond the downtown New York scene. His stripped-back, street-derived aesthetic — worn not as costume but as a second skin — profoundly informed later generations of designers and musicians. Most notably Hedi Slimane, who photographed Vega in New York in the early 2000s and later incorporated imagery from Vega's Ransom Note collages into collections for Celine; and Rick Owens, who recently collaborated with Suicide on a capsule collection for SS26 Temple.
The gloves also appear in the Nike Soldier music video, starring the musician Kris Esfandiari as Vega.
