A 1977 US one-dollar bill signed by Sid Vicious in ink at Randy's Rodeo, San Antonio, Texas, on the night of 8 January 1978 — the fifth date of the Sex Pistols' nine-night US tour, and the show at which Vicious was photographed onstage with a bandaged hand after striking an audience member with his bass.
This bill was signed before Memphis — before Vicious resumed using heroin on the tour. Crew kept him on handles of vodka through the early dates to stave off withdrawal; Memphis, the next night, was the turning point at which the regime broke down. Onstage in Memphis, Vicious carved “gimme a fix” into his chest. The dollar bill therefore captures Vicious at his most functional moment on the entire tour, two nights before the descent began.
PROVENANCE:
Obtained at Randy's Rodeo, San Antonio, on 8 January 1978 by Jez Bird; thence from the collection of Joshua White
