Daytona Ref. 16523 "Slate"

The collector’s Daytona, with nostalgic appeal.

Reference 16523 is executed in two-tone stainless steel and 18k yellow gold with one of the most varied dial offerings of its generation.

A key model in Rolex’s “Zenith Daytona” era, the 16523 was produced from 1988 to 2000 alongside the steel 16520 and gold 16528. This was the era when the Daytona first went automatic, powered by Rolex’s substantially reworked version of Zenith’s El Primero, known as caliber 4030. Across its production, Rolex offered the 16523 with an unusually broad range of dials, from black and white lacquer to silver, mother-of-pearl, and diamond-set versions. For collectors, that variety is part of the appeal: the same reference can look remarkably different depending on the dial.

This example is fitted with a brushed anthracite dial and gold subdial registers, paired with an engraved gold tachymeter bezel and two-tone Oyster bracelet. It’s also one of the more accessible ways into the collectible Zenith Daytona family–bringing together the era’s automatic experience and vintage proportions with a hit of yellow gold.
