Philippe Cheng (b. 1961, New York City) is an American artist and photographer whose multidisciplinary practice explores the emotional and perceptual qualities of landscape, memory, and light. Working across photography, installation, publishing, and site-specific interventions, Cheng creates contemplative works that blur the boundaries between representation and abstraction. His distinctive photographic process—often employing deliberate shifts in focus, atmospheric color, and unconventional materials including sandpaper—transforms familiar environments into meditative fields of sensation, emphasizing the experience of place over its literal description. Based in New York with studios in Manhattan and Bridgehampton, Cheng's practice is rooted in a sustained exploration of the East End landscape while engaging broader themes of time, presence, and human connection through an elegant and deeply poetic visual language.

Cheng has presented exhibitions and site-specific projects in collaboration with institutions including Guild Hall, the Leiber Collection, Sylvester Manor, and the Parrish Art Museum, and has participated in artist residencies at The Watermill Center and PROGR Bern, Switzerland. His work is held in the Library Collection of the Museum of Modern Art, as well as the collections of the Parrish Art Museum, the Leiber Collection, Guild Hall, and LongHouse Reserve, in addition to numerous private collections. His acclaimed monograph Still: The East End Photographs further established his reputation for creating evocative, painterly interpretations of landscape, while ongoing projects continue to expand his investigation of photography as a vehicle for memory, perception, and quiet reflection.
