A MEGALODON TOOTH
Otodus megalodon
Miocene epoch (approximately 23–3.6 million years ago)
South Carolina, USA
specimen: 5 3/4 inches (14.6 cm)
height with stand: 7 inches (17.8 cm)
This example displays warm amber-to-honey colouration — the result of mineral infiltration during its long preservation in the coastal marine sediments of South Carolina. The serrations are in excellent condition for an ocean-recovered tooth, with some original cutting edges preserved.
Otodus megalodon dominated the world's oceans for more than twenty million years. South Carolina's coastal rivers and nearshore sediments are among the most prolific Megalodon localities in the world.
