Revived in 1983 by visionary Jean-Claude Biver, Blancpain returned to the forefront of haute horlogerie during the 1980s and 1990s with a bold philosophy: “Since 1735, there has never been a quartz Blancpain watch. And there never will be.” Emphasizing traditional mechanical watchmaking during the height of the Quartz Crisis, the brand helped to usher in a new golden age of complications, becoming a technical powerhouse and pioneer of modern mechanical innovation. Under Biver’s direction, Blancpain became synonymous with classic elegance and complex movements, particularly with the Villeret collection, which embodied the brand’s refined, traditionalist aesthetic.
The present example, the Villeret Split-Seconds Chronograph reference 1186, encapsulates this era of mechanical excellence and design sophistication. Housed in a warm yellow gold case with refined lugs and a stepped bezel, it features a mesmerizing sunburst blue dial, rarely seen and coveted by collectors for its deep iridescent quality. In varying light, the dial transforms — subdued and moody in shadow, yet dazzling in direct sun, revealing an almost kaleidoscopic vibrancy.
The case is in excellent overall condition, showing light surface wear and a pleasing patina, with crisp hallmarks and engraved caseback text still sharply preserved. The watch is powered by an automatic split-seconds chronograph movement — a complication celebrated for both its visual and technical intricacy.
Rarely seen on the market and even more elusive with this blue dial configuration, the reference 1186 stands as a testament to Blancpain’s remarkable contributions during a pivotal moment in modern watchmaking history.
