Punching Bag, Trunk & Stand

Born from a moment of humor that quickly became vision, this Louis Vuitton punching bag set traces its origins to a photoshoot outside Paris, at Studio L’Olivier. Preparing the space for Karl Lagerfeld, a joking remark about a “boxing setup” sparked what would soon evolve into a fully realized concept—one that fused sport, spectacle, and the codes of the House of Louis Vuitton.

At the time, Lagerfeld was in conversation with Delphine Arnault around a major anniversary project celebrating Louis Vuitton’s 160th year. The idea of a boxing-inspired object took shape within The Icon and Iconoclasts collection, an ambitious initiative that invited leading creative figures to reinterpret the iconic LV monogram. What emerged was this sculptural and unexpected ensemble—at once playful and impeccably crafted.

Sébastien Jondeau was closely involved in the development of the project, contributing to its details and accessories, and shaping the atmosphere around the piece. Produced in an edition of just 25 examples, the set was an immediate press sensation. The present example is the very one featured in official press imagery and is the set through which the world first encountered this audacious Vuitton creation.

In recognition of Jondeau’s involvement, Lagerfeld gifted the set to him personally, with the encouragement that it be used rather than merely admired. It would go on to live both in his office and his home, embodying the rare intersection of utility, design, and personal history.

The set comprises the iconic monogrammed punching bag, its bespoke stand, and the accompanying boxing trunk, which opens to reveal a refined travel closet, finished with cowhide trim and gold-tone brass hardware. More than an object, this is a testament to creative dialogue, friendship, and the lightness with which great design can sometimes begin.

Né d'un moment d'humour qui s'est rapidement transformé en vision, cet ensemble de sacs de frappe Louis Vuitton trouve son origine dans une séance de photos en région parisienne, au Studio L'Olivier. En préparant l'espace pour Karl Lagerfeld, une remarque plaisante sur une « installation de boxe » a déclenché ce qui allait bientôt évoluer vers un concept entièrement réalisé, fusionnant le sport, le spectacle et les codes de la Maison Louis Vuitton.

À l'époque, Lagerfeld discutait avec Delphine Arnault d'un projet d'anniversaire majeur célébrant les 160 ans de Louis Vuitton. L'idée d'un objet inspiré de la boxe a pris forme dans la collection Icônes et Iconoclastes, une initiative ambitieuse qui invitait les plus grands créateurs à réinterpréter le monogramme iconique de LV. C'est ainsi qu'est né cet ensemble sculptural et inattendu, à la fois ludique et impeccablement réalisé.

Sébastien Jondeau a été étroitement impliqué dans le développement du projet, contribuant aux détails et aux accessoires, et façonnant l'atmosphère autour de la pièce. Produit à seulement 25 exemplaires, le coffret a immédiatement fait sensation auprès de la presse. Le présent exemplaire est celui qui figure sur les images de presse officielles et c'est grâce à lui que le monde a découvert pour la première fois cette audacieuse création de Vuitton.

En reconnaissance de l'implication de Jondeau, Lagerfeld lui a offert l'ensemble personnellement, en l'encourageant à l'utiliser plutôt qu'à l'admirer. La veste a ensuite été installée dans son bureau et chez lui, incarnant l'intersection rare de l'utilité, du design et de l'histoire personnelle.

L'ensemble comprend l'emblématique sac de frappe monogrammé, son support sur mesure et la malle de boxe qui l'accompagne, qui s'ouvre pour révéler un sac de voyage raffiné, avec des finitions en cuir de vache et des ferrures en laiton doré. Plus qu'un objet, il s'agit d'un témoignage du dialogue créatif, de l'amitié et de la légèreté avec laquelle un grand design peut parfois commencer.
