Art documenting art imitating life. JR’s path to art prestige weaves in and out of graffiti, photo documentation, back to graffiti, to photo documentation as graffiti, which would eventually land him amongst the art elite. Originally a Parisian graf kid, he eventually took to a camera and started snapping flicks of himself and his friends bombing the streets of Paris. Later, he printed the photos in black and white photocopy-style prints and wheatpasted them around the city. He created impromptu galleries in the streets, or what he called: Expo 2 Rue. While the photos and scale would get larger over time (eventually to an enormous, several-stories-tall scale) the gallery always remained the streets. He plastered his photos all over the world and inevitably in prestigious galleries and hallowed museums across the globe. Frequent collaborator and forever phriend to Pharrell, we’re honored to offer this exclusive, self-explanatory JR piece entitled Pharrell’s Left Eye.
