Nineteen years before David Production put JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in front of a global modern audience with its 2012 television series, A.P.P.P. tried the manga first. The 1993 OVA adaptation of Hirohiko Araki’s Stardust Crusaders — directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo with character designs by Junichi Hayama — pulled Araki’s long-running weirdness into a hand-painted vocabulary of violet shadows and heavy chiaroscuro that remains the aesthetic touchstone every subsequent JoJo adaptation has been measured against. This animation cel pairs Jotaro Kujo (schoolboy cap pulled low, chain draped off the brim, hand hovering at his face) with Muhammad Avdol (gold ankh-bead necklace, orange scarf, dark fez-wrap crown, three parallel scar lines across the cheek) together in close frame. Muhammad Avdol is the Egyptian fortune-teller and fire-Stand user whose death at the hands of the invisible assassin Vanilla Ice is one of Stardust Crusaders’ most-cited sequences. Avdol appears alive in only Episodes 8 through 11 of the OVA run, a four-episode window that makes any two-shot of him alongside the series’ lead a materially scarce category inside the broader JoJo production archive.
