Vash the Stampede is the “Humanoid Typhoon” — the sixty-billion-double-dollar bounty gunslinger of Yasuhiro Nightow’s manga, famous across half a desert planet for destroying entire cities and famous to anyone who’s actually met him for being a lanky, pacifist, donut-obsessed goofball who refuses to kill. This production cel catches the character in close framing against negative space: spiked blond hair catching light, orange-tinted round sunglasses, signature long red duster thrown open across the body, oversized silver revolver drawn and leveled off-frame. Directed by Satoshi Nishimura with character designs by Takahiro Yoshimatsu, the 26-episode Madhouse adaptation aired on TV Tokyo in 1998 and would find its outsized Western audience five years later through Adult Swim’s 2003 US broadcast run, where it became one of the formative gateway titles for the late-wave American anime boom. Madhouse’s output across the production window remained fully hand-painted, placing this cel inside the final generation of pre-digital anime work before the industry’s 2000–01 workflow shift.
