Kachamukku (Green/Red)

KAWS released "Kachamukku" in the winter of 2021 through a collaboration with the long-running Japanese children's television series Hirake! Ponkikki, folding two of the show's most beloved characters directly into his own visual language. The figure's name combines Gachapin and Mukku, the show's twin mascots, splitting them down the middle with the green Gachapin occupying the left half and the red Mukku on the right. The characters are unified through KAWS's signature X-marked eyes and bone-shaped ears applied across the composition, marking a full reinterpretation of external cultural iconography through the artist's own visual grammar. The result reads as one of the more genuinely hybrid pieces in the KAWS collectible catalog and not just a straightforward reissue of an existing KAWS character. The piece debuted at the KAWS TOKYO FIRST exhibition and retailed through KAWSONE ahead of its general release in 2022; KAWS's signature crossbone and X-eye motifs are sculpted directly into the figure rather than individually signed. This example is brand new — only removed from original packaging for photography — with two small marks noted as received from the manufacturer.

KAWS (Brian Donnelly, b. 1974, Jersey City, NJ) is an American artist and designer whose practice spans painting, sculpture, illustration and limited-edition vinyl figures. A 1996 School of Visual Arts graduate, he first gained notice for graffiti-style interventions on advertising before building a globally recognized body of work exhibited by major museums and collaborating with Nike, Uniqlo, Dior and Audemars Piguet, among others.
