Steve Albini recorded In Utero at Pachyderm Studio in Minnesota in February 1993 for a flat $100,000 fee — refusing royalties on the record on principle — across two weeks of sessions that deliberately pulled Nirvana's sound back toward abrasive underground territory after Nevermind commercial reach. The record arrived on DGC in September 1993 as what would turn out to be the band's final studio album; Kurt Cobain was dead by April 1994, making the 1993–94 In Utero tour the final live-touring window of Nirvana's active life. This black cotton tee comes from that tour's local-crew merchandise program — produced only for the road-and-venue production team rather than for retail sale, with design briefs that always ran toward minimal identification. The small white left-chest print carries the stylized winged-angel silhouette from the In Utero album artwork with "NIRVANA" set above and "LOCAL CREW" set below in matched block type, kept deliberately unprinted across the back and sleeves.
