“Now I’m nothing” closes the chorus of “Terrible Lie” on Pretty Hate Machine (TVT Records, 1989) — the song Trent Reznor used to open Nine Inch Nails sets across the entire first touring cycle of the project. Reznor had written and performed the album almost entirely alone in a Cleveland studio by night while working as a janitor at Right Track Recordings; by the time this tee was circulating, the specific lyric had become shorthand for the whole industrial-rock operation he’d pulled out of the underground across Pretty Hate Machine, Broken (1992), and The Downward Spiral (1994). This weathered grey cotton body carries the bracketed NIN logo across the chest with the lowercase caption directly beneath, and a ghost reverse-print of the same type bleeds faintly through the back panel.
