First developed in the late 1970s as part of the British artist duo's sustained engagement with Cold War nuclear anxiety, the Nuclear Sunbather sits among Dove and White's most-recognised works — appropriating glossy magazine advertising and rerouting it through colour-saturated screen-print to collapse consumer leisure imagery and atomic apocalypse into the same picture plane.
The image runs parallel to the broader late-Seventies and early-Eighties appropriation moment of Richard Prince and Barbara Kruger while emerging from the distinctly British political-graphic lineage running alongside Jamie Reid's anti-consumerist work for the Sex Pistols. It has subsequently been reprinted across the artists' Wonder Workshop, Kitsch-22 and Modzart Review imprints, and was published in the BOY Blackmail catalogue (1980) and Alice Hiller and John Gordon's The T-Shirt Book (London: Ebury Press, 1988).
