Gray Pinstripe Frayed Hem Suit

Paul Tazewell wore this Alexander McQueen suit to a public conversation at Kent State University on race in the American theater industry, held in the years after Hamilton won him the Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Musical. A two-piece tailoring set from Sarah Burton's tenure at the house, cut in alternating black and silver-grey pinstripes of varying widths — the broader stripes broken by narrower ones in an off-rhythm cadence that gives the surface texture as much as line. The cuffs and edges are deliberately frayed, the kind of intentional unfinished detail Burton built into her ready-to-wear to soften the formality of her sharper tailoring.
