Dr. Esther Mahlangu – Mam Esther as she is affectionately known by many – is a celebrated South African artist who has been painting for over 70 years. Her body of work traditional Ndebele-style paintings is steeped in culture and heritage, which she has used to jettison her work into pop culture and contemporary art conversation. She pierced the art world even deeper in the early 90s when she was commissioned by BMW to participate in their legendary Art Car program. This piece offered here is a gorgeous example of Esther’s signature style. While the colors and shapes are bold, the work is balanced by those same qualities.
