Studies into the Past
Grasso created this painting, depicting the historical scene of Bonaparte before the Spinx. Pharrell Williams is depicted on horseback in lieu of Bonaparte, with a group of surreal spheres overhead.

Exploring space, time and the blurred lines between reality and imagination, French conceptual artist Laurent Grasso gives us this surreal dreamscape. With P as the central figure and inspired by a painting by 19th-century academicism painter Jean-Léon Gérôme, Grasso created this piece after meeting Pharrell at Perrotin Gallery in 2014. It is part of a larger series he calls Studies into the Past – a conceptual project about time in which he blurs the temporality of what is shown.
