Dragon Quest launched in Japan in May 1986 as Yuji Horii's RPG for the Famicom, and the original Slime — a drop-shaped blue monster with a wide smile designed by Akira Toriyama in his secondary career as the series' character artist — has anchored every subsequent entry in the franchise as its primary mascot.
