Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura — translated loosely as "Those Obnoxious Aliens" — ran from 1978 through 1987 as the manga that made Takahashi one of the most commercially successful artists in Japanese publishing history, and the anime adaptation (directed in part by Mamoru Oshii before his shift into Patlabor and Ghost in the Shell) ran across 195 episodes on Fuji TV through most of the 1980s. The series' core joke is simple: a tiger-striped-bikini-wearing alien princess named Lum chooses a Japanese teenage boy as her husband and refuses to leave Earth. This black satin souvenir-cut jacket carries the "Urusei Yatsura" wordmark embroidered in flowing red cursive script with a small five-point star accent, running in the official licensed-apparel vocabulary of the 1990s Takahashi merchandise program.
