Born in 1935 in rural South Africa, Esther Mahlangu began painting at a young age under the guidance of her mother and grandmother, inheriting the Ndebele tradition of mural decoration. Her work, historically applied to the exteriors of homes, translates cultural codes of identity, status, and continuity into bold geometric abstraction, executed entirely freehand. Since the late 20th century, Mahlangu has brought this visual language to a global stage through collaborations with institutions and brands, notably becoming the first woman to create a BMW Art Car in 1991. Today, her paintings exist as both cultural documents and contemporary artworks, bridging ancestral knowledge with the international art market.
