The connection between Nike and LAIKA runs deeper than any standard cross-brand relationship. LAIKA operates out of Hillsboro, Oregon — a short drive from Nike's Beaverton campus — and the animation studio is led by Travis Knight, LAIKA's president and CEO and the son of Nike co-founder Phil Knight. That family and geographic proximity has produced a small, quietly documented series of one-off Nike pieces created directly on campus for LAIKA's own executive team, and this pair of Air Force 1 Highs is one of them. The shoes carry a fully hand-etched illustration program across the entire white leather upper, rendered in warm sepia-brown pyrography that reads like a wood-burned sketchbook translated onto the classic 1982 Bruce Kilgore silhouette. The composition documents LAIKA's feature catalog through 2016 as an integrated visual archive: "PARANORMAN" set in the film's title lettering on one panel, "KUBO and the TWO STRINGS" wrapping the collar and heel, "oraline" (Coraline) inscribed along the lower quarter, and hand-drawn character portraits, city architecture, and film-world detail integrated into a continuous illustration that reads front-to-back across both shoes. Interpersed across text on the shoe panels are the iconic LAIKA Studio characters from BoxTrolls, Coraline, Paranorman, and Kubo and The Two Strings.
The Air Force 1 High itself has been Nike's canvas for high-end personalization and executive gifting since the silhouette's earliest premium releases in the mid-2000s, but pieces made on-campus for a specific studio's leadership sit inside an entirely different tier of Nike collecting — the internal-only category, produced in units of one or two rather than any edition size, and effectively never leaving the recipient's hands. This pair belongs to that tier. Comes with the original Nike Air Force 1 branded box. Between the LAIKA-Knight-Nike Portland lineage, the executive-only distribution, the hand-etched craft of the illustration itself, and the fact that the shoe carries LAIKA's entire feature catalog as a single wearable object, the pair sits at an intersection almost nothing on the collector market can duplicate.
