NOTES:
This limited edition Hong Kong Stool by Herzog & de Meuron is a sculptural object that bridges traditional Asian woodworking with contemporary design. Originally conceived during the design process for the M+ museum benches in Hong Kong, this stool draws inspiration from the archetype of traditional Asian wooden gates, subtly nodding to their characteristic forms and the ancient tradition of woodworking.
This particular version—crafted in bamboo—is part of a rare limited edition of only 48. The construction, held together by a single wooden spike, eliminates the need for glue or screws. The result is a meditative puzzle-piece assembly that nods to classical Chinese carpentry, but with a distinctly modern clarity. Rippling milled surfaces and a subtle lacquered sheen amplify the stool’s tactility, while its slight play in balance invites reconsideration of stability as a design principle.
