Harness Embellished Wool Grain De Poudre Blazer

In March 2022, a month after becoming the first African American male costume designer ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design, Paul Tazewell wore this Alexander McQueen jacket to the 24th Costume Designers Guild Awards. Nominated for an award of Excellence in Period Film category for Steven Spielberg's 2021 retelling of the 1957 musical, for which he color-coded the Sharks in fiery reds and crimsons against the Jets in cooled blues and greys to bring the period to life.

The black tuxedo-style piece from Sarah Burton's tenure at the house is cut to her sharply tailored evening silhouette with peaked satin lapels. The defining detail is an asymmetric silver-thread botanical embroidery — hand-worked in the dimensional style Burton's atelier became known for — running from the right shoulder down through the lapel and across the chest, with the left side left clean to balance the composition.
