A pivotal moment in fashion history, this 2014 Chanel Graffiti Backpack captures the early, electric convergence of luxury couture and streetwear, years before such collisions became industry standard. Designed under Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2014 Ready-to-Wear collection, the piece mimics a worn artist’s rucksack: hand-sprayed CHANEL logo, paint-splattered canvas, frayed straps, and a climbing carabiner charm. Subversively distressed, it blurred the lines between atelier precision and DIY rebellion. Unveiled on the Paris runway amid a riot of color, the collection drew direct inspiration from contemporary art. Models wore painterly tweeds, bold brushstroke prints, and graffiti-tagged accessories.
This particular piece comes from the personal collection of Sarah Andelman, the founder of the legendary Paris concept store colette. Featured in a dedicated Chanel window curated by Andelman at colette, the release coincided with Chanel’s launch of its first sneakers and the very moment Dior followed with their own street styles. As Andelman recalls, it was a “very, very big moment”: not only for the collaboration with Chanel, but for what it signaled: a seismic cultural shift where colette's curatorial eye pushed luxury into dialogue with the street.
