EXHIBITED:
New Britain Museum of American Art, NEW/NOW: Shantell Martin, October 2020-April 2021.
NOTES:
A rare customized rendition of the iconic Ligne Roset “Togo” ottoman, this piece features Shantell Martin’s signature linear illustrations and typographic interventions across a vibrant red textile. Produced in 2020, Martin’s transformation of the form reflects her ongoing practice of infusing everyday objects with personal narrative, identity, and interactivity.
This is a one-of-a-kind piece made up of two collaborations between the artist. First, Shantell collaborated with Momentum Textiles in 2018 to create the upholstery. Second, she collaborated with Ligne Roset to re-imagine with this new upholstery the classic Togo seating collection which was first designed by Michael Ducaroy in 1973.
