This coat hails from the original Andy Warhol x Stephen Sprouse collection, a groundbreaking collaboration that debuted for Spring 1988. Conceived just months after Warhol’s death in 1987, the project became one of the earliest and most significant intersections of contemporary art and fashion. The Warhol estate granted Sprouse exclusive access to unpublished works, from which he selected Warhol’s late-series Camouflage silkscreens (1986). Sprouse reimagined the camouflage—traditionally meant to conceal. Cut in Sprouse’s signature mod silhouette, the coat features silver-tone hardware, zip closures at the front, chest, and hips, a structured high collar, and circular elbow pads. An embroidered script detail across the chest offers a subtle counterpoint to its electric palette.
This particular piece was acquired in 1987 by Sophie Bramly - renowned photographer, producer, and one of the few to comprehensively document hip-hop’s early years. At the time, Bramly was immersed in New York’s downtown art and music scenes. Worn fewer than ten times, the coat has remained in her personal collection ever since. As Bramly recalls, Mauricio Padilha, owner of one of the largest Stephen Sprouse archives, once said: “When you see the clothing in person, it’s so vibrant, exciting, and so well made. The pieces you see today are over 35 years old and still so luscious and wearable. You still look cooler than anyone in the room when you wear it. It’s timeless, but very of the moment.”
