NOTES:

Born in Colorado Springs in 1972, Jeffrey Gibson is a multidisciplinary artist of Cherokee and Choctaw descent, whose vibrant practice spans paintings, sculpture, video, performance and installation. Now based in Hudson, New York, Gibson is known for integrating indigenous craft traditions such as beadwork, fringe and drum-making with contemporary materials and references to pop culture, fashion and queer identity. His work explores themes of cultural hybridity, resilience and self-determination, often incorporating phrases and slogans that speak to empowerment and collective memory. In 2024, Gibson made history as the first Indigenous artist to represent the United States with a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale, presenting the space in which to place me, a show that honors Native individuals and communities who preserved their traditions despite adversity and reclaims space through a vibrant, ceremonial visual language.
