NOTES:

“I wanted to make a work that everyone can own—one that everyone can have. . . . Because as soon as you read it, you say, ‘I belong here,’ and you do belong.” - Tavares Strachan

The phrase exists as a declarative statement, a performance, a sculpture and a form of community development. "You Belong Here" uses a seemingly straightforward phrase, to evoke dialog about the historical undercurrents present throughout the city. Who gets to determine belonging and if so, then where? The phrase is an affirmation and a veiled question that in referencing a reclamation of belonging that asks us to reimagine how we define place—and this place in particular. Born in Nassau, Bahamas in 1979, Tavares Strachan is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores displacement, aspiration and invisibility through the lens of art, science, history, and politics. He is known for his ambitious projects like The Encyclopedia of Invisibility, which highlights overlooked and marginalized historical figures and events. Strachan’s recent exhibitions include Starless Midnight at Marian Goodman Gallery in New York, an immersive presentation comprising painting, sound, robotics, neon, marble and hair and Tavares Strachan: Between Me and You at the Blanton Museum of Art.
