Speedmaster Space-Flown 'Mir 365' No. 9

Of the many Speedmasters tied to space, the Mir 365 occupies a category of its own because it is not a commemorative issue but a space-flown watch that was the product of a scientific experiment. In July 1993, a group of Speedmaster Professionals was carried aboard the Russian space station Mir and remained in orbit for a full 365 days, returning to Earth in July 1994. The purpose was rigorous rather than ceremonial: to study the effects of prolonged microgravity on the mechanical movement, an ordeal that made the Speedmaster arguably the most thoroughly tested watch in the world.

Following their return, Omega offered these flown examples for sale — 28 in stainless steel and 7 in yellow gold — each engraved on the caseback to record its year aboard the station, the present example being No. 9 of the 28 steel watches. That inscription, noting both the Speedmaster's lunar legacy and its 365 days on Mir, transforms the watch from a symbol of space exploration into a physical participant in it. Few timepieces can claim to have spent a continuous year in orbit; fewer still were made available to collectors.

The combination of verified time in space, extreme scarcity, and documented scientific pedigree has made the Mir 365 highly prized. It represents the purest expression of the Speedmaster's identity: not a watch that merely references space, but one that has been there and come back to tell the story.
