Daytona Ref. 16518 "Inverted 6"

The reference 16518 combines 18k yellow gold with Rolex’s first automatic Daytona movement—and, notably, a leather strap instead of the era’s more familiar bracelet.

The 16518 belongs to Rolex’s “Zenith Daytona” generation, produced from 1988 to 2000—the era in which the Cosmograph first received an automatic movement. Rather than develop an in-house caliber, Rolex sourced Zenith’s El Primero base and substantially reworked it into the caliber 4030, retaining the foundation of the original architecture. Within the generation, the 16518 is the leather-strap sibling to the bracelet-equipped ref. 16528–and noticeably less common on the market.

The gold Zenith Daytona also marked Rolex’s return to regular precious-metal production for the model after sporadic production during the manual-wind era. Its appeal is as much about its transitional place in Daytona history as the watch itself: vintage-inflected proportions, a Zenith-derived movement, and the smooth sweep of high-beat hands.
