The history of the Air-King dates back to 1945 when Rolex released a litany of “Air” models — the Air-Lion, Air-Giant, and the Air-King. Among the group, the Air-King was the winner, remaining in production for decades. The reference 116900 was introduced at Baselworld in 2016 as the first thoroughly modern Air-King. The model was long executed in a 34mm case, but this update is notable due to its 40mm Oyster case. The dial is finished in a semi-gloss black with touches of green. The unique layout with aviator-style numerals is inspired by two cockpit instruments developed by Rolex for the British supersonic land vehicle Bloodhound SSC.
Flipping over this seemingly standard Air-King, we are met with the detail that makes it truly special — the engraved Khanjar on the caseback. This is the national emblem of Oman and indicates that this Rolex was a part of a selection of watches made on special request from the Sultan of Oman, and presented as gifts to his closest dignitaries and servants.
The history of Khanjar emblazoned Rolex watches starts with His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said (1940-2019), the first Sultan of Oman. His Majesty was also known for his passion for watches, specifically Rolex. Shortly after his ascent to the throne at age 30 in 1970, we start to see Rolex watches with Khanjar logos on the dial and/or caseback. These are exceedingly rare and highly collectible today. Given the production year of this watch, we can assume it was ordered during the rule of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, Sultan Qaboos’s successor. Sultan Haitham is the current ruler of Oman and a noted wearer of his own Rolex Air-King ref. 116900, one of the few Rolex watches he has been seen wearing.
The watch is offered in virtually "new-old-stock" condition. It is accompanied by its original accessories, including the Khanjar stamped outer box.
