Seemingly a “regular” yellow gold Day-Date, this reference 18038 stands above the rest thanks to a rare “pinball” dial, exceptionally clean condition, and a full set of box and papers.

Launched in 1977, the ref. 18038 ushered in a new era for Rolex’s renowned Day-Date line. Equipped with the updated caliber 3055 movement and a quick-set date feature, garnering the nickname “single quick,” it seamlessly blended contemporary convenience with enduring sophistication. The true archetype for a luxury sports watch, the Day-Date was born in 1956, ever since ingrained itself within the fabric of modern culture. Nicknamed the “Presidential” or simply “Presi” — a misnomer, in fact, as the Day-Date’s standard bracelet bears the official name President, though the watch itself does not — Day-Dates have graced the wrists of figures like Martin Luther King, Gerald Ford, Jack Nicklaus, and even Tony Soprano.

Referred to by collectors as a “pinball” dial, circular applied hour markers replace the standard batons here. Beyond relative rarity, you may come across 100 standard dials for every one “pinball” dial, the resulting look is a bit sportier and a real hat tip to those who really know vintage Rolex. Dating to 1987, this example is further distinguished by its condition and complete set of box and papers. The dial is untouched, and the case certainly unpolished. It seems as though this watch has seen very little wear in the past 38 years — look at the original caseback sticker. Accompanying the watch are its original punched papers, inner presentation box, outer box, and serial number matching hangtag — everything you want to see.
