Worn by Michael Schumacher in 1989, his first season in German Formula 3, the present Bell XFM-1 helmet carries his name on the side and has been signed by Schumacher in blue marker. Bell Racing Service has examined the helmet and confirmed it as an original worn by Schumacher in 1989.
Schumacher won the German Formula König championship in 1988, the year he also raced in Formula Ford, and moved to German Formula 3 in 1989. In 1990 and 1991 he drove the Sauber-Mercedes in the World Sportscar Championship as part of the Mercedes junior program, winning in Mexico and Japan, and in 1991 he made his only Le Mans 24 Hours start with Mercedes. He made his Formula 1 debut later that year with Jordan at the Belgian Grand Prix and went on to win seven World Championships.
This exceptionally rare early-career helmet was used across four seasons before Schumacher reached Formula 1.
