Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper has sat as one of the most recognizable masterpieces of the Renaissance since its 1498 completion on the refectory wall of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, and Nigel VMU transforms the composition into a three-dimensional relief across this three-deck sculptural triptych. The original painting’s narrative compression — Christ at the center, the twelve apostles arranged in triangulated clusters at the moment of betrayal — is preserved in full, with figures, gestures, and intricate detail emerging from the surface in depth rather than painted plane. Leonardo’s one-point perspective and the specific gestural choreography across the table read continuously across the three decks when the piece is installed in its intended horizontal alignment. The skateboard deck sits at the structural center of VMU’s broader Cultural Reliefs practice — a deliberate inversion of a familiar contemporary cultural object into a primary sculptural canvas, where the shape itself becomes part of the compositional architecture rather than a neutral support.
Cultural Reliefs is an ongoing sculptural series that reads contemporary culture through the language of relief sculpture, turning familiar imagery, historical references, and cultural narratives into layered three-dimensional works. Rooted in the traditions of classical sculpture, the series bridges past and present — reimagining historical and contemporary subjects through unconventional materials, techniques, and canvases.
Nigel VMU (Nigel Veremu) is a London-based multidisciplinary artist and designer working across sculpture, collectible objects, functional design, and large-scale installation. His practice sits at the intersection of fine art, design, and popular culture, exploring contemporary identity, cultural memory, and everyday symbolism — turning familiar references into sculptural forms and lasting artefacts. Ongoing bodies of work including Art of Living and Cultural Reliefs push new approaches to materiality, craftsmanship, and storytelling, bridging classical artistic traditions with contemporary expression. As founder of VMU STUDIO, his wider practice extends into public art, spatial installations, and cultural collaborations with global partners including Nike, the NFL, and The Football Association.
