Basketball is a philosophy of its own — rooted in community, identity, ambition, and the shared conviction that ball is life — and Nigel VMU builds the argument into sculpture across this three-deck triptych. The piece reimagines Raphael’s early-16th-century fresco The School of Athens, which celebrated philosophy, knowledge, and intellectual exchange through the gathered Greek masters, by inserting basketball motifs and reimagining the Renaissance thinkers into figures debating basketball culture as one of the dominant universal languages of modern life — a game that has moved beyond the court into fashion, music, art, and everyday vocabulary. The fresco’s iconic architecture and arrangement of figures carry through: three skateboard decks lock together as a single continuous relief sculpture, with the composition reading in low relief rather than painted plane.
Cultural Reliefs is an ongoing sculptural series that reads contemporary culture through the language of relief sculpture, turning familiar imagery, historical references, and cultural narratives into layered three-dimensional works. Rooted in the traditions of classical sculpture, the series bridges past and present.
