Executed in 1998. This unique drawing to the verso of a lithograph from the bound book Thinking of You is from the special edition of 53 published by the Renaissance Society, Chicago for the exhibition Raymond Pettibon, 13 September - 8 November 1998. The works are sold framed.

NOTE:

Born in Tucson in 1957, Raymond Pettibon is known for his distinctive works on paper that combine image and text, drawing from comic books, literature, politics, religion, sports, surfing, film noir, and American counterculture. Emerging from the Southern California punk scene of the late 1970s and 1980s, Pettibon became closely associated with the visual language of Black Flag and SST Records before gaining international recognition for his drawings and artist’s books.

These works come from Thinking of You, a 1998 hardcover artist’s book published by the Renaissance Society, Chicago, in conjunction with Pettibon’s first North American museum exhibition. The exhibition featured more than 500 drawings, with imagery drawn from cartoons, West Coast punk, B movies, tabloid melodrama, religion, literature, and popular culture. Centered on the phallus as a recurring and unstable motif, Thinking of You operates as part scrapbook, part diary, and part private meditation, moving between provocation, comedy, and poetry.

Pettibon’s work has been the subject of major museum exhibitions, including presentations at the Renaissance Society, Chicago; the Drawing Center, New York; Kunsthalle Wien; the New Museum, New York; and the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht. His work is held in leading public collections including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Tate.
