A late Victorian double-serpent ring in 18-karat yellow gold, the two heads meeting at the bezel and set with a cushion sapphire of approximately 0.70 carats and a rose-cut diamond of approximately 0.30 carats in G color and SI clarity. The bodies coil around the finger in smooth polished gold, with the heads hand-chased to suggest the taper of jaw and skull. The pairing of sapphire and diamond in a twin-serpent setting was one of the most enduring late-19th-century engagement and betrothal motifs — two snakes for two lives joined, the cool blue and white fire reading as a daylight counterpart to the ruby-and-sapphire convention.
