Tinker Hatfield broke sharply from his own Jordan design language when he released the Air Jordan VII in March 1992 — the first Jordan to drop the visible Air unit from the sidewall, the first to lose the Nike swoosh from the exterior, and the first to build its graphic identity around West African tribal art rather than the technical sportswear vocabulary of the earlier models, drawing specifically from Mangbetu bodypainting for the bright zigzag chevrons and saturated color-blocking that came to define the shoe.
