Nike released the Air Jordan I in 1985 alongside a full apparel launch that included the Wings satin bomber — the first piece of Jordan-branded outerwear ever produced, and one of the earliest carriers of the Wings logo that would go on to define the mythology of the entire Jordan Brand line. Peter Moore, Nike's Creative Director at the time, drew the Wings graphic for the original Air Jordan poster campaign: Jordan holding a basketball with the Wings logo silhouetted behind him against an open sky, a piece of imagery that reshaped athletic marketing and helped push the banned-by-the-NBA rookie's sneaker into cultural territory beyond basketball. The Wings logo predates the Jumpman (which Tinker Hatfield would design a few years later) and stands as the original Jordan graphic.
