Born in Southern California in 1985 and now based in Detroit, Tyrrell Winston is a multidisciplinary artist whose work examines sport, celebrity, memory, and the systems through which cultural value is assigned. His practice began with collecting objects from the streets and basketball courts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. By reorganizing worn basketballs, abandoned nets, and other found materials, Winston transforms overlooked objects into records of use, aspiration, and collective experience.

Basketball is one of Winston’s most persistent subjects, serving as a framework for exploring fame, authenticity, nostalgia, and public identity. In his Punishment Paintings, he repeatedly reproduces the autographs of celebrated athletes until their signatures begin to lose their legibility and dissolve into abstraction. What Do The Stats Say? (Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James) brings together the signatures of three defining figures in modern basketball. Painted repeatedly across a monumental blue-and-white field, their names overlap, disappear, and reemerge through a dense accumulation of gestural marks. The work complicates the distinction between reverence and erasure, questioning how repetition, recognition, and celebrity shape perceptions of value and greatness.

Winston’s work has been presented internationally, with solo exhibitions at Cranbrook Art Museum, Library Street Collective, Stems Gallery, and LANDMARK and Belowground in Hong Kong. His work is held in collections including Cranbrook Art Museum, the Columbus Museum of Art, Nike, Aimé Leon Dore, and the Detroit Pistons.
