Mary Weatherford (b. 1963 Ojai, California) is recognized as a leading figure in contemporary painting, known for her innovative engagement with the legacies of American abstraction. Her work reconsiders traditions such as Color Field painting and landscape through a feminist and experimental lens, often incorporating sculptural elements—including her signature neon tubes—alongside a physically driven, gestural approach to mark-making. Through these methods, she uses abstraction as both a formal language and a deeply personal means of responding to place, history, and lived experience.

Weatherford has been the subject of major solo exhibitions, including the survey Canyon–Daisy–Eden (Tang Teaching Museum and SITE Santa Fe, 2020–21), as well as presentations at Museo di Palazzo Grimani, Venice, and the Aspen Art Museum. Her work has also been included in significant group exhibitions at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, SFMOMA, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Her paintings are held in major public collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Tate, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York; she lives and works in Los Angeles.
